Internet of Things (IoT) is defined as “the network of physical objects or ‘things’ embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data.” As the next tens of billions of devices are connected to the Internet, issues of security are becoming ever more important for Internet of Things. In addition to engineering issues, there are considerations of communications, public policy, business and law. Consequently the University of Southern California has launched a multi-disciplinary initiative embracing those specialties with partners including Google and the National Governors Association. Prof. Adam Powell III will talk on how the project could inform policymakers in national and regional U.S. governments of opportunities and urgent demands of IoT emergency response and create a community of interest of stakeholders interested and involved in IoT emergency response. The project also aims to identify and prioritize measures to create IoT emergency response capacity and its public policy environment.
