Synopsis of Lecture:

In the rich history of Buddhist studies in Germany, Chinese Buddhism played a rather subordinate role. But it was in the focus of many more German scholars than one would think. In order to trace the scholarly engagement with Chinese Buddhism in Germany, it is necessary to draw on many different academic disciplines. And especially for the early period it is important to deal intensively with the individual fates of the scientists and the respective historical context. Against this background, the presentation shows how research on Chinese Buddhism in Germany has developed to date and poses questions regarding the challenges of the future.
