2018 marks the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, the legendary American musical genius. The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chorus (CU Chorus) will perform an all-Bernstein programme as a tribute to the composer’s 100th birthday, as part of the worldwide official celebrations of Leonard Bernstein at 100.
American conductor Eric Stark will join the Chorus again as the guest conductor of this concert, with a programme featuring Bernstein’s choral music for the theater, including selections from his operetta Candide, musical theatre Mass, as well as complete performance of his incidental music to The Lark, and the one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti. In addition, his early works, such as his first composition Psalm 148 for soprano and piano, will also be performed.
Hong Kong actress Margaret Cheung will narrate the legend of Joan of Arc, together with Bernstein’s incidental music to The Lark for chorus. Vocal soloists Albert Lim and Carol Lin will sing the main roles of the opera Trouble in Tahiti, in a special performance with a mixed chorus substituting the Jazz vocal trio in the original score.
