Speaker(s):

Dr. Cheung Leung Fu (Lecturer of Department of Mathematics)

Prof. Chan Man Nin (Assistant Professor of Earth System Science Programme)

Biography of Speaker:

Dr. Cheung received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the CUHK and Ph.D. degree from University of Bonn. He worked at National University of Singapore and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University before joining CUHK. His research works are mainly about geometry of curved surfaces, especially  soap bubbles.

Professor Chan received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering at California Institute of Technology. His research area is ambient air pollution, focusing on the sources of particulate matter (PM). His research group applies novel analytical techniques coupled with high resolution mass spectrometers to investigate the composition and chemical transformation of PM in the atmosphere, such that we can better understand their sources and properties.

Event Details:

The late Professor Lau Oi Wah devoted herself to promoting science education in both university and high school, and left a legacy of 35 years of service to the CUHK.  To carry on Professor Lau’s dedication to igniting a passion for science among high school students, the Faculty of Science and the Lau Oi Wah Memorial Fund organize the Lau Oi Wah Memorial Science Lecture Series each year to bring scientific knowledge and advancement to the public and nurture young scientists.

Synopsis of Lecture:

Natural Language Processing and Mathematics E-Learning

The first lecture probes the interrelationship among language, mathematics and computer programming. We can parse mathematical texts with the help of ideas from linguistics and computer programs.

COVID-19’s impacts on our air quality

The second lecture introduces the serious air pollution problem in Hong Kong, explores the origins of different air pollutants and finds out how the poor air quality will affect our daily life.
