Biography of Speaker:

Born in 1952 in Beijing , Professor Chen Lai read geology at the now Central South University and graduated in 1976. He received his master's and doctoral degrees at Peking University in 1981 and 1985, respectively. Among his teachers were Zhang Dainian and Feng Youlan. Before assuming his current position at Tsinghua University , Professor Chen had taught at Peking University for twenty-eight years. He first started as a lecturer in 1981 and became an associate professor in 1986 and professor in 1990. He was also the chair of the Teaching and Research Office of Chinese Philosophy and the director of the Research Centre for Confucianism at Peking University . Professor Chen is currently the dean of the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Learning and professor at the Department of Philosophy of Tsinghua University. Synopsis of Lecture:

The idea of Guoxue in modern times has been represented differently in various contexts. It can be politically oriented, driven by an urge to strive for national salvation; or culturally oriented, led by the enlightenment movement. Guoxue can also be academically oriented, taking as its model Sinology, as understood by the West. The recent concept of Guoxue can also be defined in three ways: 1. traditional Chinese thoughts, culture, and academic system, prior to their confrontation with Western culture ; 2. an extension of the first definition, meaning Chinese culture in general; 3. Guoxue as an academic system that puts traditional Chinese thoughts and culture as its focus of study, i.e., Guoxue studies.
Guoxue studies have evolved in three stages in modern times . The first stage is characterized by a continuation of the methodology of the textology prevalent in the Qing dynasty, but with a sense of modern culture . Guoxue studies in the second stage echoed with the New Culture Movement, emphasising the scientific method and questioning past doctrines. The third stage is the Sinologized Guoxue as represented by the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Learning . It is characterized by its merging with Sinology and international academia, representing a new style of research. Zhang Taiyan is the representative of the first stage, while his disciples at Peking University represent the second. The third stage is represented by Wang Guowei and scholars at the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Learning, who have been at the forefront of the world of Chinese studies. In this paper, I am going to revisit the academic and historical significance of the development of the new Guoxue movement since the 1920s.
