Biography of Speaker:

Dr. Samuel Law is an Associate Professor in psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. His clinical and research work focuses on areas of community mental health and health systems, with associated interests in cross-cultural psychiatry, global mental health, and medical-legal-ethical concerns related to the treatment of people with severe mental illness. His work and training are informed by best- practices in public health, community psychiatry, psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery, and social anthropology.

His past and current research projects include developing and evaluating innovative models in community mental health service delivery (e.g. Establishing and evaluating the first Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) model in North America; consulting, training and evaluation of the first Assertive Community Treatment model in China; developing and evaluating a national rural physician education program in mental health and suicide prevention in China); cross-cultural adaptations of service models (e.g. consulting and research on traditional Holy Water healers in Ethiopia), and exploration of clinical dilemmas (e.g. Covid-19 community health system adaptations and innovations in Ontario; use of financial incentives in engagement, UN Convention of Rights of People with Disability’s impact on clinical practice).

He is the Lead in the China Project at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, and a Board member of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists. He received his medical training at McGill University, Residency in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Canada; and Fellowship in Public Psychiatry at Columbia University, and Masters in Public Health at Harvard University, USA.
