One of the most important scientific breakthroughs in recent years is the confirmation that the universe is full of invisible matter and energy – dark matter and dark energy. In comparison, normal matter that we are familiar with contributes a negligible fraction to the total mass-energy of the universe! These dark matter and dark energy play a dominating role in the evolution of the universe, and yet we know almost nothing about them. How can scientists study these ‘invisible’ forms of matter-energy? I will briefly discuss how the dark components of the universe were discovered as well as some contemporary research in this area.
