Synopsis of Lecture:

Pathology (or laboratory medicine) is a branch of medicine that studies the basis of diseases and translates such an understanding to laboratory tests that are employed to diagnose or manage diseases. Pathologists, doctors who specialise in pathology, adopt the role of medical detectives and scrutinise tell-tale signs within patients’ specimens to unfold the mysteries of the patients’ ailments. When coupled with a sense of curiosity, knowledge in pathological sciences could be further applied to unveil the currently unknown medical knowledge and for the development of new medical tests. In this lecture, the speaker will disclose the detective journey that led to the successful development of a new generation of prenatal diagnostic tests based on the analysis of fetal DNA in pregnant women’s blood. This testing approach is safe and harmless to the unborn child, unlike the invasive tests that are in current use, such as amniocentesis. These new tests, including a test for Down syndrome, have since been adopted by many prenatal diagnostic centres worldwide.
