In this presentation, Prof. Ruth Hayhoe will share insights from a newly published book with 13 chapters by current scholars of history, sociology and education translated from Chinese. Highlighted themes include approaches to liberal arts education that integrated classical Chinese values with those coming from European and American traditions, architectural creations that embody a classical Chinese gestalt with Western features integrated in harmonious ways, and a curricular orientation towards serving the public good that gave attention to fields such as agriculture, health, social services and women’s studies. These will be set within an overview of interaction between Europe and China going back to the first encounters in the 7th century AD and the collaboration between Matteo Ricci and Xu Guangqi in the early 17th century.
