Dr. Weihua An is Associate Professor of Sociology and Quantitative Theory and Methods at Emory University. He received a Ph.D. in Sociology and an A.M. in Statistics from Harvard University. His research focuses on network analysis and causal inference with applications to studying inequality and social policy, health, and organizations.
Causal inference and network analysis are two very important research methods in social sciences. Few previous studies have combined the two. However, recent studies have found that the intersection of the two can produce many innovations. On one hand, introducing causal inference into network analysis can improve the causality of network analysis, which is a great improvement over traditional descriptive network analysis. On the other hand, network analysis can also help improve traditional causal inference, especially when there is interdependence across units. A series of examples will be provided to illustrate either side of the intersection.
