Biography of Speaker:

Kiu Tung Poon

Young Steinway Artist Kiu Tung Poon appeared as a recitalist and collaborative pianist on concert stages in the US, UK, France, Germany, Portugal, Vienna, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China. International music festival appearances include Tanglewood and Aspen in the US, Konzerthaus in Austria, St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, Great Wall in Beijing, and French May in Hong Kong. Her rendition of Chinese and American contemporary compositions as well as Ravel’s piano works was described as ‘lyrical and emotionally nuanced… displayed lyricism and virtuosity’  (Woodstock Times). Her playing with violinist Patrick Yim on their latest Naxos release on American living composers was noted as ‘lively and authoritative’ (American Record Guide) and ‘effective presence’ (Strad). Her debut solo album on Contemporary Chinese composers will be released by Naxos Grand Piano. Her world premiere of Mark Morris/Samuel Barber’s Excursions with Mark Morris Dance Group in the Tanglewood Music Festival received enthusiastic reviews by critics writing for The New York Times and Boston Phoenix.

Graduated from the Indiana University Bloomington and the University of Texas at Austin with a DMA in Piano Performance, she currently teaches at her alma mater The Chinese University of Hong Kong as a lecturer in performance and serves as the performance stream coordinator in the Department of Music.

 

Megan Sterling

Principal Flute of the Hong Kong Philharmonic since 2002, Australian-born Megan Sterling has enjoyed working with some of the world’s top conductors and soloists for three decades. She has appeared several times as a soloist with the HKPhil and other orchestras. She has appeared in recitals, radio broadcasts, Canto-pop recordings and chamber music concerts in Hong Kong, China, Australia, Europe and the US. She has appeared live on national television and radio on three continents, and performed at Parliament House for the Australian Prime Minister.

Sterling was awarded 1st Prize and Special Concerto Prize at the 2003 International Flute Competition in Budapest. In her home country, she was winner of the 1st Prize and Audience Prize at the Australian National Flute Competition; winner of a Symphony Australia Performer’s Award; 1st Prize winner at the concerto competitions of Melbourne University and the Canberra School of Music; and winner of the prestigious Queen’s Trust Award. Sterling completed most of her music studies in Australia with Vernon Hill, David Bloom and Prudence Davis. Further studies abroad include with Paul Edmund-Davies and Michael Cox in the UK (London), and Hans Krug in Germany (Berlin).

In addition to her full-time role with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Sterling is a founding member of the Australian World Orchestra (AWO), which brings Australian musicians from elite orchestras around the world to play together under conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Simon Rattle. She is also a sought-after flute teacher, with additional experience giving masterclasses, chamber music coaching and adjudication for competitions.

Christian Goldsmith

American trombonist Christian Goldsmith is a player of versatility and range. His diverse background includes orchestral playing, chamber music, big band, marching band, concert band, jazz and pop music.

A native of Southern California, Christian attended the prestigious Los Angeles County High School of the Arts. He went on to complete undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in classical trombone performance at the University of Southern California (USC) with Prof Terry Cravens.

He is the winner of the USC and Young Musicians Foundation Concerto Competitions, the Pasadena Young Musician’s Competition, as well as being awarded the Robert Marsteller Memorial Scholarship.

Christian first worked in the Asia-Pacific region when he was invited to take part in the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, under the tuition of players from the Vienna Philharmonic. He went on to win the Principal Trombone position with the Macao Orchestra, a position which he held for 10 years.

Christian joined the trombone section of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018.
