Biography of Speaker:

LAU Kwok-ying (劉國英), born and educated in Hong Kong, PhD in philosophy awarded by University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne in 1993 with a dissertation on Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology. Currently Professor and Director of M.A. Program at the Department of Philosophy, CUHK, he is founding editor-in-chief of the journal Phenomenology and the Human Sciences (in Chinese) since 2004 and Director of the Edwin Cheng Foundation Asian Centre for Phenomenology, CUHK, since 2010. He is also Associate Director of the Research Institute for the Humanities, CUHK, since 2007. Co-founder of the research network P.E.A.CE (Phenomenology for East-Asian CirclE) since 2004, he has organized the Symposia Asiatica Phaenomenologica, Summer Master Class in Phenomenology for Asian Scholars at CUHK from 2007-2014. He received the Research Excellence Award, Faculty of Arts, CUHK 2017, with his single authored book Phenomenology and Intercultural Understanding: Toward a New Cultural Flesh (Springer, 2016). His other book Traces of French Phenomenology: From Sartre to Derrida (in Chinese, Taipei: Azoth Books) is in print and scheduled to appear in Winter 2018.
