Biography of Speaker:

Dr Emma Jones is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Sheffield, England. She is also Chair of the UK Association of Law Teachers and General Editor of The Law Teacher journal. Her research focuses upon the role of wellbeing and emotions in legal education and the legal profession. She is an International Bar Association Wellbeing Commissioner, leading on their International Guidelines for Wellbeing in Legal Education. She also leads on the development of the Fit for Law initiative with the UK charity LawCare.

This session will explore the wellbeing of both staff and students in law schools. Drawing on empirical data it will consider existing levels of wellbeing and the causes of poor wellbeing, including rigid traditional notions of ‘thinking like a lawyer’, adversarial norms and academic competitiveness. Drawing on the International Bar Association’s International Guidelines for Wellbeing in Legal Education, the session will discuss how to implement sustainable, evidence-based approaches to enhance staff and student wellbeing and promote thriving.
