This session provides an opportunity to showcase the latest book from the Academic Advisory Group of the Section on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure Law to students, faculty, and practitioners.

The book delivers a detailed and authoritative examination of natural resources law and policy in the context of achieving net zero emissions. In reaction to the climate crisis, numerous countries, corporations, and other entities globally have committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2060 or earlier. Although the urgency of a clean energy transition is apparent, poorly designed transition programs can lead to complex environmental, social, and governance challenges, such as legal liabilities and prolonged disputes. Additionally, the increasing demand for minerals essential for clean energy technologies introduces critical issues, including how to manage the exploration and development of these minerals without worsening resource conflicts, resource nationalism, human rights abuses, protectionism, energy insecurity, social exclusion, and inequality, particularly in regions prone to conflict and high risk.

These challenges emphasize the importance of developing net zero-aligned natural resource contracts, legislation, and investment agreements to facilitate a fair and inclusive energy transition. This session will feature insights from the book’s expert contributors, discussing innovative approaches in legal drafting, contract negotiation, and policymaking to address the complex questions of resource sovereignty, security, and solidarity during the net zero transition.
