Biography of Speaker:

Dr Valerie Lim:
Valerie worked as a Senior Principal Speech Therapist at the Singapore General Hospital. She has more than 20 years of experience working in the field of stuttering. Valerie obtained her PhD at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre (ASRC), Sydney, in 2007, where she investigated the manifestation and treatment of bilinguals who stutter in Singapore. She has successfully treated many children who stutter using the Lidcombe Program and is a Lidcombe Program Consortium Member. Her research interests include bilingual stuttering and bilingual aphasia, and she has publications and research grants in both areas. She continues to teach and supervise students/speech therapists both clinically and in research projects.

Mr Thomas Law:
Thomas is a Speech Therapist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has worked with children and adults who stutter for more than 10 years. Thomas has provided Lidcombe program to English, Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking children who stutter in Australia, Hong Kong and China. He is also a pioneer in using Telehealth for people who stutter in Hong Kong. Thomas obtained his Speech Pathology qualification at the University of Sydney. He also holds a master degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Thomas is currently completing his PhD at the Australian Stuttering Research Center (USyd), investigating the topography and linguistic triggers of stuttering in Cantonese.

Event Details:

The Lidcombe Program is an evidence based, behavioural treatment for early stuttering, developed by clinicians at the Stuttering Unit, South Western Sydney Local Health District and researchers at the University of Sydney. Please refer to the attached flyer for the details of the Lidcombe Program. The lecture on Advances in Stuttering aims to equip participants with the advances in stuttering. The latest findings in stuttering epidemiology and causal models will be presented. A range of assessment methods will also be discussed and practiced. Participants will also understand the latest research findings on the relationship between stuttering and language as well as bilingualism.
