Synopsis of Lecture:

The talk will cover the following issues;
 ・The characteristics and current situation of traditional media (newspaper, TV) and new media (internet) in Japan
・Newspapers up to the 90’s and TV after the 90’s
・The reasons why the internet is not as influential in Japan as in China or South Korea
・The relationship between politics and media
・Authorities’ and politicians’ reactions and methods of contacts with the media

Prof. Yakushiji has 32 years of experience working as a reporter at one of Japan’s top national newspapers, the Asahi Shimbun, where he mainly covered politics. Later, he became an editorial writer and the chief of The Political Bureau. He has also served as the Editor-in-Chief for Asahi’s monthly opinion magazine, “Ronza”. Prof. Yakushiji’s areas of expertise include Japanese politics, diplomacy and mass communication. He has published several books and articles on the history of important Japanese politicians, including former prime ministers.
