Biography of Speaker:

John G. Rice, 56, is vice chairman of GE and president & CEO of GE Global Growth and Operations. In November 2010, the GE Board of Directors named Rice to lead the company’s global operations based in Hong Kong. Immediately prior to his current position, Rice served as vice chairman of GE and president & CEO of GE Technology Infrastructure, and from 2005-2007 as vice chairman of GE’s industrial and infrastructure businesses. Rice began his General Electric career in 1978 as a member of the Financial Management Program, moving to the GE Corporate Audit Staff in 1981. Following various operating assignments in GE’s Appliance business starting in 1984, he became vice president of the Corporate Audit Staff in 1994. In 1995 Rice relocated to Singapore as president of GE’s Plastics business for Asia/Pacific. In 1997 he was appointed president & CEO of GE Transportation Systems in Erie, Pennsylvania. Rice became president and CEO of GE Energy in November of 2000 and served in this capacity through June of 2005. Rice earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and currently serves on the Board of Trustees there. Rice is also a trustee of Emory University, and serves on several boards including the International Advisory Board of King Fahd University in Saudi Arabia, and the Board of the CDC Foundation. He is a past chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Cammie reside in Hong Kong.

Synopsis of Lecture:

The world needs infrastructure, a requirement for economic and social growth and a competitive advantage. The middle class population is projected to nearly double by 2020, requiring an enormous investment in infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for energy, health care services and transport. Governments around the world are under pressure to deliver. John Rice, GE’s Vice Chairman and President & CEO of GE’s Global Growth and Operations, will discuss GE’s global growth strategy with a focus on China, where the company has been doing business for over a hundred years. He will describe GE’s participation in China’s transformation and talk about GE’s success, which has been enabled by a partnership strategy that leverages GE’s considerable global strengths combined with an investment in local capabilities. He will also discuss new forms of partnership and collaboration resulting in innovative technologies and products that the Chinese market demands.
