Facilities and buildings in the campus have been deliberately defaced and vandalised recently and these acts escalated during last night (25 September) and early this morning (26 September).  Various locations in the main campus were spray-painted by a group of people. Some people used wallpaper paste and super glue to stick posters on the ground. The University feels deep regret and distress for their acts and the large area of defacement across the campus.

The University has always respected freedom of speech for all its members. There are always designated locations for members to express their opinions, within the principles of mutual respect and compliance with the rules. Unfortunately, a group of people recently vandalised the campus willfully. They deliberately spray-painted phrases and markings at various locations, put up posters with the use of wallpaper paste and super glue. They neglected other university members’ rights and feelings. Freedom of speech is no excuse for their acts.

All members of the University are entitled to enjoy the beauty of the campus, which was built by colleagues from different units and front-line staff over the years. Members who love the campus will feel sad about this act of vandalism. Our front-line staff have been cleaning up and are dedicated to restoring the campus environment.

The University reserves the rights to take disciplinary action against members who participate in these acts of vandalism. If the cases are related to offences of damage to property, the University will take that seriously.
