CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan Gives the First Lecture to Launch CUHK 55th Anniversary “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series
Professor Rocky S. TUAN, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Lee Quo Wei and Lee Yick Hoi Lun Professor of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, today (11 January 2019) spoke on the topic “Regenerative Medicine: Promises and Challenges” in CUHK to launch “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series. The lecture drew around 200 CUHK staff members and students, alumni, secondary school students and members of the public present. After the lecture, Professor Tuan had a fruitful discussion with the moderators on hot topics of regenerative medicine and about his experiences and achievements in his field. He also took questions from the audience.
Professor Tuan is an internationally renowned biomedical scientist specialising in tissue engineering and regeneration. His research activities cover basic science and engineering, as well as translational and clinical applications. By integrating “smart” biotechnology with his stem cell research, he has successfully developed translational applications for the repair and regeneration of human tissues. He engineered the first-ever three dimensional joint-on-a-chip, called the “microJoint”, to replicate a human joint using a microbioreactor platform. The microJoint is used to study and screen for potential therapeutic agents for osteoarthritis. Professor Tuan’s significant contributions have been internationally recognised. In 2017, Professor Tuan was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and, in 2018, a Fellow of the Chinese Association of Inventions for his accomplishments in innovation and translational research that have had a significant impact on society.
