CUHK Enhances Collaborative Strength with Xi’an Jiaotong University
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) have forged a strategic partnership by jointly establishing a research centre on migration and signing a memorandum of understanding. An inauguration ceremony for the joint centre was held on campus on 15 June 2018. Officiating guests included Dr. Tan Tieniu, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Professor Wang Shuguo, President of XJTU and Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK.
Professor Tuan said during the ceremony, ‘CUHK and XJTU have been collaborating in teaching, student exchange and research cooperation. Based on the long established relationship between the two universities, the newly established joint research centre will utilise the research resources and expertise of both institutions in multilateral partnerships. It is believed that with the joint efforts of both sides, our collaboration will surely yield great outcomes, expanding the depth of the collaboration and providing greater innovative opportunities and directions.’
Professor Wang pointed out that both CUHK and XJTU have a lot in common in their teaching strategies. He believes that the future collaboration of the two universities will grow with broader spaces and diversified areas. He will continue to promote the development of bilateral cooperation, fully exploiting the strength in the two institutions for advancing high-standard research.
Over the years, the CUHK and XJTU research groups have been in productive collaboration and at the forefront of research in the field of migration. The joint research centre will focus its effort on relevant research covering an extensive range of topics to include international immigration and emigration and internal migration in China, as well as relevant social policies and economic impact. The integration of international and internal migrants in China, the social and economic impact of emigration and return migration on households and communities in China, and talent migration in the Greater Bay Area in China will also be included. The joint research centre will serve as an exchange platform for scholars all over the world to conduct cross-disciplinary research, and develop as a leading base globally on migration.
