Statement from The Chinese University of Hong Kong
In response to the appearance of offensive messages on the University’s “Democracy Wall’ at the “Cultural Square”, The Chinese University of Hong Kong issues the following statement:
Members of the University must exercise their freedom of speech on campus without intruding on another person’s dignity or rights. The posters making abusive and personal attacks on others that appeared on the University’s “Democracy Wall’ at the “Cultural Square” yesterday evening are clearly contrary to the principle of mutual respect. There was also no signatory on the posters, which was in breach of the guidelines for putting up posters on the “Democracy Wall” as set out by the Student Union of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Following discussions between the University management and the Student Union representatives, the Student Union has removed the posters in accordance with their own guidelines. The University is pleased to see the Student Union’s responsible action in discharging their duties.
