Statement of The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Professor Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) gives the following remarks after the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council:
Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of the University, and every member of the University should have the freedom to express any idea. That is not to say that the exercise of this freedom should be boundless. Indeed, freedom of speech should be premised on principles that it:
– Will not violate the law;
– Will not intrude another person’s dignity or rights.
The Basic Law stipulates that Hong Kong is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China. CUHK reiterates that the University is against the notion of Hong Kong independence. We do not want our campus turned into a place for different political groups to spread their propaganda. This will only ruin the peaceful environment in which our teachers and students pursue knowledge.
I therefore request that the Student Union remove the materials which advocate Hong Kong independence, as soon as possible. Otherwise, the University will take action to remove the materials.
Recently, CUHK students made malicious personal attacks against the others in abusive languages. On behalf of the University, I would like to convey our most sincere apologies to those who were offended.
As regards the student’s conduct and behavior, his/her affiliated College will handle the investigation in accordance with the University’s standard procedures.
