Survey Findings on the HKSAR Government’s Popularity in August 2016Released by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at CUHK
A telephone survey was conducted from 29 to 31 August 2016 by Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong to study the popularity of the HKSAR Government for the month of August 2016. 716 respondents aged 18 or above were successfully interviewed, with a response rate of 39.0%. The sampling error is + or – 3.67 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.
Major findings are summarized as follows:
Satisfaction towards the HKSAR Government. According to the current survey in August, 40.8% of the 716 respondents expressed dissatisfaction towards the HKSAR Government, 18.6% said they were satisfied and 39.4% answered ‘in-between’. The corresponding figures in July were 40.9%, 17.2%, and 40.5%. Results of August 2016 were not significantly different from those of the past month statistically.
Rating of Chief Executive LEUNG Chun-ying. The current survey in August showed that the performance rating of Chief Executive (with a point scale ranging from 0 to 100 while 50 as a passing mark) stood at 39.7 in average and it was 40.1 last month, and the difference between July 2016 and August 2016 was also found to have no statistical significance.
Ratings of Three Secretaries. The ratings of Chief Secretary for Administration (Carrie LAM), Financial Secretary (John TSANG), and Secretary for Justice (Rimsky YUEN) in August 2016 were 53.3, 61.1, and 47.4 respectively. The corresponding figures in July 2016 were 54.2, 61.7, and 47.6. No statistically significant differences were observed in the ratings of three secretaries between July 2016 and August 2016.
Trust in the HKSAR and the Central Governments. In August 2016, 23.3% of the respondents showed trust in the HKSAR Government and 33.4% expressed distrust; 42.3% answered ‘in-between’. The results of July 2016 were 21.8%, 32.2%, and 44.3% respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in trust in the HKSAR Government between July 2016 and August 2016. Concerning the level of trust in the Central Government in August 2016, while 23.2% said they trusted the Central Government, 38.3% answered the opposite; 35.4% said ‘in-between’. The respective figures in the previous month were 22.3%, 39.5%, and 33.6%. Again, the difference between July 2016 and August 2016 was also found to be statistically insignificant.
