The Chinese University of Hong Kong Holds 80th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its 80th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees today (26 May). Prof. Joseph J.Y SUNG, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK presided at the Congregation and conferred honorary degrees on Prof. Randy W. SCHEKMAN, renowned cell biologist and 2013 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, and Prof. Joseph E. STIGLITZ, internationally-acclaimed economist and 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to research and society.
Prof. Randy W. Schekman was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, while Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz received the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa.
After the ceremony, Professor Schekman and Professor Stiglitz each presented a distinguished lecture on ‘How Cells Package and Traffic Proteins for Export’ and ‘Global Inequality’ respectively. The lectures attracted about 700 CUHK staff, students, alumni and members of the public.
