CUHK’s Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) and the Central Policy Unit (CPU) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government are joining hands to organise the International Conference on Hong Kong and the World under the Belt and Road Initiative on 17-18 December 2015 on the university campus.
In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward the Belt and Road Initiative to promote regional and international cooperation in different dimensions. There have been few formal scholarly exchanges of views on how to approach this initiative. To address this academic need, the HKIAPS and the CPU will co-host a two-day international conference to bring together scholars, policymakers, think tanks, and other stakeholders mostly from the Belt and Road region to explore the opportunities and challenges of this initiative, with a special emphasis on Hong Kong’s role and contributions. The two-day conference consists of a plenary session on the morning of the first day, followed by a number of parallel thematic sessions. For the plenary session, internationally reputable scholars will be invited as keynote speakers. For the parallel sessions, 42 panelists from the Belt and Road region will be invited to join. The main aim of the conference is to promote academic exchanges and facilitate high-level discussions amongst the most brilliant minds throughout the globe. Moreover, it fosters future research collaborations. Scholars from 32 countries/societies and over 40 universities will share their views on the Belt and Road Initiative, with special reference to the opportunities and challenges that it presents to their countries and Hong Kong.
