Dr Nizami is the Founder-Director of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, a Recognised Independent Centre of Oxford University. In 2012 the Centre was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth II.
As an historian, Dr Nizami has for over twenty five years taught and supervised students. He is a member of the Faculties of History and Oriental Studies at Oxford University; Prince of Wales Fellow at Magdalen College and Emeritus Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford. His academic specialisation is the history of South Asia.
As a bridge-builder at an international level, Dr Nizami has been engaged in the promotion of dialogue and understanding between different cultures. For nearly two decades he has been the Convenor of an annual international meeting at Ditchley Park, about Islam and the West.
At the national level he has contributed to academic activities at various British universities. He has served as the Chair of the Council of Wilton Park; member of the Court of Oxford Brookes University; and the Academic Council of Cumberland Lodge.
At the local level, Dr Nizami has served as a Director of Oxford Inspires; joint chair of the Oxford Abrahamic Group; a Patron of the Oxford Amnesty Lectures; and a Governor of Magdalen College School.
