The Chinese population will reach the historical peak of 1.4 billion in around 2030. While China is enjoying rapid economic growth and experiencing a speedy urbanization process, sustainable food supply has become a pressing issue. Shouldering 20-22% of the world’s population, China only possesses 7-9% of the world’s arable lands. The arable lands are also depleting and deteriorating due to scarcity of renewable fresh water, salinization, and environmental pollutions. On the one hand, the Chinese government is formulating new policy to boost agricultural economics and increase the income of farmers and villages. On the other hand, agricultural biotechnology has become an important means to enhance productivity while reducing negative impacts on the environment. The speaker will present his analysis on the challenges facing Chinese agriculture and share his research experience in agricultural biotechnology.
