Mr. Chan Tak Hang, Professor Leung Seung Ming Alvin, Dr. Yuen Pong Yiu, Professor Barley Mak

Mr. CHAN Tak Hang is graduate of United College of CUHK. He is an experienced educator. He served as a secondary school teacher for 34 years and as part-time lecturer in universities in Hong Kong for 22 years. Mr. Chan is now the School Development Officer of the Hong Kong Institute of Education Research, CUHK.   

Professor Leung Seung-ming, Alvin, is Dean of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He received his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the Universityof Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1988. He joined CUHK in 1996 after serving as a faculty member at the Universityof Nebraska-Lincolnand the Universityof Houstonrespectively. His research and publications focused in career development and assessment, cross-cultural and multicultural counseling, and counseling in educational settings. Professor Leung has been engaged actively in training counselors, teachers, and psychologists for over 20 years in Hong Kong and internationally. He is a Fellow of American Psychological Association (APA) and Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association. He received the “Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of the Counseling Profession” Award from the Society of Counseling Psychology of APA, and the 2009 “Distinguished Alumni Award” from his Alma Mater, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 2011, his co-edited book, “International Handbook of Cross-Cultural Counseling: Cultural Assumptions and Practices Worldwide” received the 2010 Ursula Gielen Book Award from the Division of International Psychology of APA.

Dr. Yuen Pong-yiu is the Principal of Tin Ka Ping Secondary School, Director of Tin Ka Ping Foundation, and an Honorary Consultant to the Faculty of Education,ChineseUniversityofHong Kong. He is currently the Chairman of North District Fight Crime Committee, Chairman of North District Youth Programme Committee, Member of Quality Education Fund Dissemination and Promotion Sub-committee, Co-opted Member of Community Care Fund Task Force under Commission on Poverty, and Advisory Committee Member of the Project WeCan organized by the Wharf (Holdings) Limited. Dr. Yuen served as the Chairman of Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools (2009-2012), Chairman of North District Secondary School Principals’ Association (2005-2009), Chairman of Secondary School Places Allocation Committee (2010-2012), Chairman of Steering Group of District-based School Development and Networking Project for Secondary Schools in the North District (2008-2010), Member of Research and Development Committee of Hong Kong Examination and Assessment Authority (2004-2007), Expert Member of Asia-pacific Center for Education Leadership and School Quality of Hong Kong Institute of Education (2000-2010), and Member of Steering Committee on Community Care Fund (2010-2012).

Barley Mak is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction of the Faculty of Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, holding the concurrent positions of Associate Head & Dean of Students of United College. Her research interests include teacher professional development, language testing and assessment, as well as second language writing and reading. Professor Mak is also the founding Director of the Centre for Enhancing English Learning and Teaching which operates a number of research and development projects both locally and internationally, among which are the WrITE project and the SMILE project. She is the principal investigator of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum Implementation Surveys 2011 and 2012-13, the Curriculum Survey on Primary Education 2011 and Consolidation and Redevelopment Work on Quality Education Fund English Language (Primary) Projects, all commissioned by the HKSAR government.

With the rising popularity of smart phones and the vastly improved Internet accessibility, the Internet has become an essential component in our lives. Every day the Internet provides us with new information to learn, creates new platforms to share, and establishes new networks to expand our social circles. People expect the newest freshest to be on the Internet but one click away anytime, anywhere. While people are enjoying the instant pleasure that the Internet brings, they are sadly much less aware of the potential threat of Internet addiction, which may adversely affect one’s academic or work performance, social relationships and health. In the form of an open forum, Mr. Chan Tak-hang, Prof. Alvin Leung, Prof. Barley Mak, and Dr Yuen Pong-yiu will define and discuss Internet addiction, a problematic issue for modern people worldwide, especially adolescents and emerging adults. Through case study analysis, the four speakers will probe the issue from psychological and mental perspectives, and from principals’, teachers’ and parents’ point of views. Upon addressing the challenges that different stakeholders face, the speakers will indicate directions and provide recommendations for schools and families to deal with Internet addiction.
