Synopsis of Lecture:

In order to enhance innovation within an educational setting, the value of creativity must be understood, transferred to students, opportunities for creativity and innovation presented, and student contributions assessed. The evidence and value of creativity lies in its many manifestations. In this respect, the highly-challenging problem of effectively assessing creative ideas, products, services or expressions across multiple disciplines (e.g. sciences, art, design, humanities, business etc.) is common to all education institutions. An innovative criterion-based system was designed by the speaker to address the assessment problem, inspire confidence and sensible risk-taking in students, and promote creativity and innovation. It was successfully tested in a two-year Outcome-Based Education project conducted at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Project studies involved, at the bachelor’s level, a creative thinking course in General Education, final year projects in the School of Design’s visual communication stream, engineering projects within the Industrial Centre and, at the master’s level, a management subject in the School of Hotel & Tourism Management. Research results will be presented from the General Education and School of Design studies. The theory and pedagogy underlying the system and its broad potential applications will be discussed.
