Event Details:

The college system of CUHK is unique among the higher institutions in Hong Kong. Colleges are not only centres of student life with residential quarters, but are also communities where students receive pastoral care and whole-person education. This year, GE Seminars will serve as a platform for the colleges to share their insights in whole-person education, particularly their ideals of College General Education, as well as delights and dilemmas in implementing service learning and sustainability education. Experts and practitioners in service learning and sustainability education will also be invited to share their experiences and reflections.

Synopsis of Lecture:

Part I: Learn and Radiate – Service-learning at Wu Yee Sun College (Professor Ming-kay POON)

The design of Wu Yee Sun College General Education Programme puts into action the College mission: Entrepreneurial Spirit with Social Responsibility. Through general education courses, students would be introduced to the many faces of society, explore ways to benefit the community and contribute to a sustainable future in innovative ways through workshops on creativity. Building on the foundation of general education, students would be able to broaden their horizons by joining the College Service-learning Programme, and thus fostering their commitment to serve the local, regional and international communities as well as leading to sustainable personal growth and development. Students are also encouraged to initiate their own service-learning projects with support from the College, putting entrepreneurial spirit with social responsibility into practice. In this talk, Professor Poon will walk through the structure of the College General Education Programme and Service-learning Programme, and the challenges and successes while implementing the Service-learning Programme.

Part II: Everything Starts from the Heart: The Design and Principles of Service Learning at Lee Woo Sing College (Dr. Sarah Sau Ha LUK)

In this sharing, Dr. Luk will introduce how the College designs its service learning within general education courses. This design aligns with the College’s development and supports the holistic growth of students: transitioning from beliefs to practice, from the classroom to the community, and from the College to the society. The lecture will cover three key design principles: first, “Starting from the Heart,” which illustrates how the design concepts of the College’s general education courses reflect the College’s beliefs, innovation, and environmental values; second, “Unique and Thoughtful Design,” focusing on how the service learning course design incorporates college’s caring culture; and third, “Working Together in Unity,” which emphasizes the extension of service learning and its role in promoting mental health. Dr. Luk will demonstrate how service learning can effectively contribute, through these principles, to both educational outcomes and community engagement.
