CUHK holds the naming ceremony of the Robert Dan Health Education Centre

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) recently held a naming ceremony for the Robert Dan Health Education Centre, in honour of Dr Robert Dan Bing-kwan, the Founding Director of the University Health Service (now known as the University Medical Service Office). The Centre has been named to express gratitude to Dr Dan and his wife, Mrs Sophia Dan Yang Wing-man, for their generous donations supporting the University’s provision of high-quality health education and medical services, and in recognition of Dr Dan’s exceptional contributions to foster a healthy campus environment at CUHK, ensuring better health protection for the University community.

The naming ceremony was jointly officiated by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President; Mrs Carrie Lam, former Chief Executive of the Hong Kong government; Dr Dan and his wife. In his address, Professor Tuan said that Dr Dan has always wholeheartedly dedicated himself to the development of CUHK. During his tenure, Dr Dan led the team in creating a comprehensive healthcare service plan, laying a robust foundation for the University’s healthcare services. Professor Tuan further said that even after retirement, Dr and Mrs Dan have continued to support the University, with their generous donations greatly contributing to the development of the CUHK Health Education Centre, and the promotion and expansion of diverse healthcare service programmes. He expressed the CUHK community’s deep appreciation of the couple’s invaluable contributions.

Mrs Lam said that Dr Dan and Mrs Dan are philanthropists, having made generous donations to numerous higher education institutions in mainland China and Hong Kong over the years. They have wholeheartedly contributed to the development of education in both regions. She also expressed her belief that staying healthy is based on the principle that “prevention is better than cure”, empahsising Robert Dan Health Education Centre plays a vital role in safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of staff and students, which is of great benefit to the University’s development. She added that she hopes the Centre will continue to strive for excellence, providing more comprehensive and high-quality health services for CUHK community.

Professor Anthony T.C. Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Alumni Relations and Advancement) of CUHK, commended Dr and Mrs Dan for their enduring passion for education and philanthropy, as well as their steadfast support for CUHK. In particular, he highlighted their significant role in the long-term development of medical research and health education at the University. In 2020, Mrs Dan generously donated to support the academic research of CUHK’s Neurology Division. Now, with their upport of Dr and Mrs Dan, the CUHK Health Education Centre can further expand its services. Professor Chan extended his heartfelt gratitude to Dr and Mrs Dan for their support.

About the CUHK Robert Dan Health Education Centre

The CUHK Robert Dan Health Education Centre is located within the University Health Centre on the CUHK campus. Aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle, it features multipurpose activity rooms, consultation rooms and offices, providing health knowledge and a variety of health seminars and courses for students and staff, including workshops on mental health, first aid courses and vaccination activities.
