CUHK Appoints Mr Kenneth Chen Wei-on as Vice-President (Administration)

The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has approved the appointment of Mr Kenneth Chen Wei-on as Vice-President (Administration) of the University for an initial term of three years with effect from 16 September 2024.

Vice-President (Administration) is one of the University’s principal administrative officers appointed by the University Council and is accountable to the Council through the Vice-Chancellor and President. The appointee is responsible for administering the infrastructure development of the University in line with the strategic vision of the University set by the Council.  As a key member of the University senior management team, the appointee will maintain strategic oversight of the administrative resources and operations of the University with a view to ensuring effective delivery of services in support of the academic, teaching, and research activities.

Mr Chen graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from Princeton University, a Master of Science degree from Harvard University, and an MBA from The Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania. Mr Chen has had a professional background in business before entering the public sector. He worked in investment banking and management consulting before joining The Hong Kong Jockey Club in various senior management positions. Mr Chen was Under Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government from 2008 to 2012, and Secretary General of the Legislative Council Secretariat from 2012 to 2024. Mr Chen has had ample experience working in challenging environments. He led a professional management team effectively and commanded respect from stakeholders of divergent views. He demonstrated a strong ability in stakeholder engagement, effectively liaising with government bureau and departments, Legislative Council Members, the media, and professional associations.

Mr Chen considers it a tremendous honour to be appointed Vice President (Administration) of the University. He said, “Having served the public sector for many years, I am delighted to be able to contribute to the higher education sector in Hong Kong. I have gained a deep appreciation of the importance of good institutional governance and effective management teamwork from my previous roles. I am confident that these experiences will guide me as I work closely with members of the University in the common goal of furthering the development of this renowned educational institution.”

Working closely with the senior management as well as various stakeholders and relevant sections of the University, Mr Chen will lead the formulation and implementation of strategies that aim to elevate the University’s international reputation, promote sustainable development, and achieve institutional excellence.

The Council at its 1st (2024) Meeting held in February 2024 approved the establishment of a Search Committee for the search of the position. Following an extensive, global search process, the Search Committee unanimously recommended Mr Chen for appointment.
