Venue:

Exhibition Area, University Library, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Event Details:

Against a backdrop of poverty and tumult in the postwar period, a group of cultural pioneers persisted with their endeavours, paving the foundation for a better Hong Kong in different areas. Those years also saw the emergence of the local theatre. Four maestros including Ma Kiam (1882-1959), Hu Chun Ping (1907-1960), Pao Han Lin (1919-2007), and Lee Woon Wah (1915-2006) have made significant contributions to the Hong Kong theatre scene. The rich collection of materials preserved in the Special Collections at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Library vividly illustrates how these four maestros have excelled as organizer, the educator, the humorist, and the practitioner respectively, and the profound impact they have had on the subsequent Hong Kong theatre culture. Through displaying their precious manuscripts, photos, and related collections, this exhibition showcases an important facet of postwar Hong Kong theatre culture.
