The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has achieved a significant milestone by ranking 36th in the QS World University Rankings 2025. The achievement represents an impressive 11-place leap from last year’s ranking, marking CUHK’s best performance in the league table since it started in 2010.

The 2025 edition features over 1,500 universities from around the world. CUHK’s outstanding performance places it among the top 3% of them, reaffirming its position as a leading global higher education institution. QS analysed institutional performance across nine critical indicators: academic reputation, citations per faculty, employer reputation, employment outcomes, faculty-student ratio, international faculty, international research network, international students, and sustainability.

CUHK improved in the scores of the majority of the indicators. Notably, CUHK improved significantly in the sustainability ranking, advancing 132 places from last year. CUHK is known for its environmental activism and its thought leadership in the creation and application of practical solutions for sustainable development. This emphasis on sustainability is one of the key factors in CUHK’s overall rise in the rankings.

CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said: “This remarkable accomplishment is a powerful validation of CUHK’s relentless pursuit of academic excellence and our ability to rival the world’s best universities. Our passionate and talented faculty, students and staff have collectively contributed to driving the University’s success on the global stage. This recognition inspires us to build on our momentum and deepen our dedication to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation, and to maintain our dedicated focus on sustainability and developing real-world solutions, in service of a better future for all.”

In addition, CUHK achieved a perfect score of 100 for its international faculty, and performed exceptionally well in citations per faculty, with a score of 92.9. Comparing CUHK’s standout ratios against the global median results, the University achieved an international faculty ratio of 56.5 (per 100 faculty members) compared to a global median of 7.8, and a 229.8 normalised citations per faculty member against a global median of 52.3. CUHK outperformed the global median results in all other indicators as well.
