15 CUHK professors receive funding support from National Natural Science Foundation of China
Four professors from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have received funding awards from the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) (2023), one of the key funding schemes from the National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Each of the researchers will receive funding of RMB2 million to support their research in Hong Kong for a maximum of three years.
CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-har said, “I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the four professors who have been recognised by the NSFC Excellent Young Scientists Award. Their achievements reflect the university’s continuous efforts to nurture talented young scholars and support groundbreaking research that addresses critical challenges and drives societal progress. I look forward to witnessing the impactful outcomes of their research projects.”
The four professors recognised by the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) are Professor Dou Qi, Assistant Professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Feng Gangyi, Associate Professor from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, Professor Ng Chun-yu, Assistant Professor from the Department of Physics, and Professor Wang Haitian, Associate Professor from The Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care.
The NSFC’s Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) was launched in 2019, and allows young scientists who have demonstrated achievements in basic research to conduct further research in areas of their choice, fostering intellectual development in academics.
Another 11 CUHK professors have received the NSFC’s Young Scientists Fund 2023. Each of them will receive funding of RMB300,000 to support their projects for three years. The 11 professors recognised by the Young Scientists Fund are Professor Chen Xiaona, Research Assistant Professor from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Professor Chen Ye, Assistant Professor from the Department of Chemistry, Professor Chen Yue, Assistant Professor from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Professor Chow Hei-man, Assistant Professor from the School of Life Sciences, Professor Hu Guohua, Assistant Professor from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Professor Kan Zihan, Assistant Professor from the Department of Geography and Resource Management, Professor Li Zhong, Assistant Professor from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Professor Wang Zhen, Research Assistant Professor from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Professor Wu Xixin, Research Assistant Professor from the Stanley Ho Big Data Decision Analytics Research Centre, Professor Yue Xiangyu, Assistant Professor from the Department of Information Engineering, and Professor Zhu Xiaobai, Assistant Professor from the Department of Finance.
The NSFC’s Young Scientists Fund started accepting applications from Hong Kong researchers in 2022. It supports young scholars as they carry out basic research in areas of their choice, enhancing their ability to conduct innovative projects independently and fostering the development of young scientists.
