Four scholars from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received awards from the 2023-24 Research Grants Council (RGC) Research Fellow Scheme (RFS) in recognition of their distinguished research achievements.

CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-har said, “I am very pleased to learn that among the 10 RGC RFS awardees, four are from CUHK. Such remarkable achievement is no doubt a testimony of the University having a pool of promising young research talent. We are proud of these four researchers and look forward to the valuable contributions and impact to the society that their innovative research shall bring. CUHK will continue our effort in nurturing new generation of outstanding researchers to pursue research excellence, so as to enhance the research competitiveness of Hong Kong in the international arena.”

The scholars to receive awards from the RGC RFS are Professor Jonathan Choi Chung-hang, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering; Professor Gao Zhenyu, an Associate Professor in the Department of Finance; Professor Gu Zhengcheng, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics; and Professor Sun Xiankai, an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering. Professor Choi’s research project is “Preclinical Translation of Spherical Nucleic Acid Nanostructures for Managing Cardiovascular Diseases”; Professor Gao’s is “In Response to Climate Change: Beliefs and Actions of Governments, Individuals, Institutions, and Corporations”; Professor Gu’s is “Topological Phase Transition and Quantum Criticality: Beyond Landau’s Paradigm”; and Professor Sun’s is “Phononic Integrated Circuits for Next-generation Phononic-optoelectronic Integrated Chips”. Each RFS awardee will be given the title “RGC Research Fellow” and CUHK will receive a fellowship grant of about HK$5.2 million per award to cover salary costs for relief teachers and support for research projects over a period of five years.
