The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has achieved outstanding results in the 2023/24 Research Grants Council (RGC) “Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme” (HSSPFS), with four distinguished scholars awarded funding for their research projects. The HSSPFS is a highly competitive scheme, with a maximum of 10 fellowships awarded each year. CUHK has been awarded for four of the 10 selected projects this year, the highest among all institutions in Hong Kong.

The four projects are “Forbidden Desires, Intersectional Inequalities: Gay and Lesbian Lives in China”, led by Professor Susanne Choi Yuk-ping, a Professor in the Department of Sociology; “The Global Yijing: The Cross-Cultural Translation and Transnational Reception of the Yijing (Book of Changes) in Western Religion and Literature”, led by Professor John Lai Tsz-pang, a Professor in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies; “Measuring the Effectiveness of Agricultural Development in Mitigating the Impacts of Floods and Droughts on Human Societies in History”, led by Professor Harry Lee Fung, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Geography and Resource Management; and “Understanding the Low Fertility in Rural China: The Perspectives of Livelihood Choices and Gender Equality”, led by Professor Tong Yuying, a Professor in the Department of Sociology. Professor Susanne Choi Yuk-ping’s project received the highest amount awarded to any of the 10 projects.

CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sham Mai-har said, “CUHK had four HSSPFS awarded projects this year, with a success rate of 80%. I am thrilled about the exceptional accomplishments of our researchers. The University will continue to support scholars in their diversified research endeavors and contribute valuable research to society.”
