CUHK hosts Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance (GHMUA) Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum on the CUHK campus on 4 July 2023. The event brought together more than 150 delegates comprising university leaders and government officials to assess the development of GHMUA with a specific focus on joint efforts in promoting the continuous progress of the Alliance during the post pandemic era.
In his opening remarks, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said, “the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan promulgated in 2019 is committed to promoting a new effort for a comprehensive opening up and mentions the role of the Alliance. Whilst showing the importance of the Alliance, it guides the direction of our future development and gives us a more pressing mission. The National 14th Five-Year Plan proposes to build a science and technology innovation corridor. It is particularly important for the three regions to rely on the existing advantages of higher education to highlight talent cultivation. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is very much honoured to be deeply involved in the education and research development of the Greater Bay Area and to promote the cultivation of innovative talents. In particular, the introduction of talents to be engaged in original research and knowledge transfer will utilise our strengths in commercialisation and professional training to achieve win-win outcomes.”
The guests expressed their continued support and commitment to GHMUA, with the hope that the development of the Alliance would bolster the influence of the Greater Bay Area, bringing significant advances in cooperation by drawing together the strengths of the three regions. The Presidents’ Forum was held across three-panel discussions where presidents of the member universities exchanged views under the theme “pooling wisdom for a bright future”.
GHMUA was established in November 2016. It was initiated by CUHK together with SYSU and UM as a higher education platform to extend the current efforts of leading universities in the three regions to pursue research excellence, nurture young talent, and serve their communities. Members of the Alliance include 27 universities from Guangdong Province, nine universities from Hong Kong, as well as seven institutions from Macao. The Alliance Board Meeting 2023 was held before the annual meeting to devise plans for GHMUA. As one of the initiating universities, CUHK has been playing a key role in mobilising resources across the Alliance to propel innovation development and talent nurturing in the Greater Bay Area.
