CUHK New Asia College receives a HK$15 million donation from Tin Ka Ping Foundation to launch the ‘Replant Spiritual Roots, Nourish Our Talents’ programme
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s New Asia College has recently received a generous donation of HK$15 million from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (the Foundation) to support the launch of the “Replant Spiritual Roots, Nourish Our Talents” programme promoting Chinese culture, establish new scholarships and bursaries, and construct its new hostel.
In appreciation of the donation, a cheque presentation ceremony was held on 30 September at CUHK. The ceremony was attended by Professor Rocky S. Tuan, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President; Mr Tin Hing-sin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation; Mr Tai Hay-lap, Vice Chairman of the Board; Mr Tin Wing-sin, Professor Kenneth Young and Dr Yuen Pong-yiu, Directors of the Foundation; Mr Bryan L Tin, Member of the Advisory Board; Mr David Day, Chief Executive of the Foundation; Mr Charles Leung Ying-wai, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees; Professor Hector Chan Sun-on, College Head, and others.
Professor Rocky Tuan said, “I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Tin Ka Ping Foundation for its generosity and long-standing support to CUHK. Since 1992, the Foundation has made substantial donations to CUHK in support of our academic development, research activities, and facility construction. Over the past 30 years, CUHK and the Foundation have worked closely together to promote the education development in Hong Kong and mainland China. Dr Tin Ka-ping’s dedication to charitable causes and selfless contributions to the country present an exemplary role model for the young generation. As the University celebrates its 60th anniversary next year, we look forward to further collaborating with the Foundation in making greater contributions to education development.”
Mr Charles Leung and Professor Hector Chan also thanked the Foundation for its support. Professor Chan said, “Dr Tin devoted his life to philanthropy and the educational mission of promoting moral education, Chinese culture and integration with other world civilisations. His relentless dedication was, in fact, a realisation of the New Asia Spirit. The educational visions bequeathed by Dr Tin Ka-ping and our College founder Mr Ch’ien Mu will be carried on by collaboration among their successors.”
Chairman of the Board of Directors Mr Tin Hing-Sin said that it was the Foundation’s honour to have become a part of CUHK and New Asia College over the years. He added that he was delighted by the opportunity to support and work with both CUHK and New Asia College on the new projects. The Foundation especially appreciates New Asia College’s emphasis on teaching Chinese culture to young generations, he noted, and the Foundation is looking forward to more collaborations with CUHK and New Asia College.
The new “Replant Spiritual Roots, Nourish our Talents” programme aims to promote Chinese virtues through a variety of activities, including Chinese cultural activities at CUHK and summer camps for local junior secondary school students, and training classes for educational workers in mainland China. The College hopes the programme will “replant spiritual roots” in their hearts and cultivate the fine values of Chinese culture. In addition, it will establish new scholarships and bursaries to help financially challenged students, and to reward students whose performance is outstanding not only academically, but also in extra-curricular activities and social services.
