Zhaoyang Zhang obtained his Ph.D. in history from University of California at Berkeley (2010) and currently serves as a professor of history in the School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Focusing on the Warring States period and the Qin and Han Dynasties, Prof. Zhang has very broad research interests and a wide range of publications. He newly published a book entitled A History of Civil Law in Early China: Cases, Statutes, Concepts and Beyond (Brill, 2022).

How were civil matters handled in ancient China? Analyzing intriguing cases of disputes over inheritance and debt taking place in the Han Dynasty, this talk discusses the functions of the civil justice system of early China in the light of recently excavated legal materials.
