AI and Big Data in Precision Medicine
Professor Runsheng Chen led a team of Chinese scientists to participate in the international Human Genome Project (HGP) during the 1990s. Today, we can easily work with our own DNA sequence. With the development of sequencing instruments, DNA sequencing is getting more accurate and quicker. The bottleneck today is that we do not understand the biological significance of DNA sequence and variations among individuals. To take an analogy, it is a dictionary containing tens of thousands of words but without annotation or explanation. Professor Chen was the first Chinese scholar to investigate the biological significance of DNA sequences. This discipline of research is called ‘‘Bioinformatics”. With the development of high-performance computers, artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to interpret big data today, DNA sequence happens to be a type of big data. Professor Chen will tell us how to use high-end computers to develop AI and apply it to disease diagnosis, patient treatment, and drug development.
