The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will add to the University Admission Scholarships in 2022-2023, benefiting more JUPAS students who are admitted to CUHK with outstanding results in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examination. It will offer two new tiers of scholarships for those attaining Level 5** in seven or more subjects, and Level 5** in one subject. The estimated value of the scholarships will be about HK$19 million, representing an increase of about 40%, and over a two-fold increase in the number of awardees from about 310 to 740 per annum.

Under the new arrangement, students admitted via JUPAS with Level 5** in seven or more subjects will be given increased renewable scholarships of HK$80,000 per annum (covering full tuition and an allowance of HK$37,900), and up to HK$80,000 for one or more outgoing exchange programmes or overseas learning activities. That means the maximum total value of this scholarship will be HK$560,000 for a six-year medical programme or HK$400,000 for a four-year programme. New students who attain Level 5** in one subject will be eligible for a scholarship of HK$5,000, while the value of scholarships or allowances for those with Level 5** in two to six subjects will increase. (See appendix for details)

Professor Andy Ka Chat WONG, Director of CUHK’s Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, said, “The ongoing pandemic has brought about not only offline class suspensions to students sitting for the HKDSE examination but also pressure from the altered examination arrangements and study plans. Students who have overcome adversity and risen to the challenge of achieving good results in the open examination deserve recognition. The University hopes that the enhanced University Admission Scholarships will encourage students to continue to strive for excellence and pursue knowledge, and will also benefit more students by offering scholarships to those who achieve Level 5** in one subject.”

CUHK offers various scholarships and awards to give due recognition to local and non-local students who perform outstandingly in their respective fields, and to promote students’ whole-person development. They include the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence, Sports Scholarships, and Scholarships Based on Non-Academic Areas. For more details, please visit Office of Admissions and Financial Aid’s website. The colleges and faculties of CUHK also provide scholarships and financial aid to affiliated students.

In addition, considering that HKDSE candidates in recent years have faced numerous challenges in their studies and examinations, CUHK will continue to extend flexibility in admission in 2022. Since the launch of HKDSE in 2012, the University has extended flexibility in considering the admission of specific candidates who have an outstanding overall performance in the HKDSE examination, but who fail to achieve the University minimum entrance requirements by one grade level in a single subject. The programmes concerned will holistically consider the academic and non-academic performance of these students, as well as their performance at selection interviews, in deciding whether to offer them admission on an exceptional basis.
