6 Jan 2022

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has topped Hong Kong’s universities in this week’s 2021-22 Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) announcement from the Research Grants Council (RGC). This week’s announcement saw funding for 48 projects totaling HK$285 million across the city’s public universities. CUHK obtained the largest share of funding securing HK$82 million across 11 projects.

Speaking about the RGC announcement, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan said he was thrilled the University had made such a strong showing in the RGC’s announcement.

“CUHK researchers have once again excelled in their endeavours to advance academic excellence and further the research impact agenda. It is truly gratifying to see our CUHK colleagues actively leading research projects that span an extensive range of areas, including cell imaging, autism, neuromuscular degeneration, Alzheimer’s Disease, reducing miscarriages, sleep disorders, as well as nanomaterials and devices. Many of these projects demonstrate some of our best minds advancing their research to develop interdisciplinary solutions to some of society’s greatest challenges. It is also noteworthy that this announcement will also see CUHK research contributing to the ongoing fight against COVID-19,” Professor Tuan said.

The announcement also includes projects funded as part of the second round of the RGC’s One-Off Coronavirus and Novel Infectious Diseases Research Exercise which will see further support for the city’s universities to continue research as part of the pandemic response.

CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Mai-Har Sham said “these collaborative research projects represent examples of CUHK’s capacity to lead the city as Hong Kong positions itself as a globally competitive knowledge powerhouse capable of emerging as an internationally recognised innovation and technology hub.”
