Statement on the Dissolution of The Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong

7 Oct 2021

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) acknowledges the statement issued today by the Student Union of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUSU).

Over the past eight months, the University has engaged in systematic and collaborative dialogue with the CUSU to identify options for it to independently register in accordance with either the Societies or Companies Ordinance. The University believes that this is a necessary step to ensure the CUSU can continue its operations compliant with the law.

CUHK has always been willing to work with CUSU provided that its actions and its incorporation are legally compliant. The University believed that registration under the Societies or Companies Ordinance represented a well-established, legally mandated framework for the CUSU to continue.

The University regrets that CUSU has elected an alternative course and has independently moved to dissolve its operations.

The University acknowledges and thanks the CUSU Council for engaging in constructive dialogue on options for CUSU’s future over recent months.

Student representation and participation is an integral part of university life. CUHK will work to transition activities previously managed by the CUSU to the Office of Student Affairs. The University will work to minimise disruption to these services during the transition period, as well as ensure that student engagement is at the heart of the CUHK student experience.
