CUHK Appoints Mr. Laurie Pearcey as Associate Vice-President (External Engagement and Outreach)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has approved the appointment of Mr. Laurie Pearcey as Associate Vice-President (External Engagement and Outreach) for a period of three years. He is expected to take up the position in mid-September 2021.

Mr. Pearcey will advise CUHK’s senior management on the University’s strategy for expanding its external reputation and profile. Mr. Pearcey will focus on expanding CUHK’s positioning with an extensive range of stakeholders such as media, public policy makers and industry partners as well as future students and alumni.

Mr. Pearcey said, “I am honoured to be joining a university which is on an extraordinary trajectory as a global powerhouse of research and education. With its heritage of excellence and as a bridge between China and the world, CUHK’s story is worthy of being told on the global stage. As it embarks on its next five-year strategy, I look forward to connecting CUHK with external stakeholders, media and public policy makers across Hong Kong and further afield, as well as contributing to the University’s agenda in the Greater Bay Area”.

Mr. Pearcey, previously Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) of the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), Australia, has a solid record of fostering global partnerships and strengthening international profile and reputation. He also held the position of Chief Executive Officer of UNSW Global Pty Ltd, which is a controlled entity owned by UNSW Sydney. He has more than 15 years of experience across international education, global engagement, non-profits and corporates, and extensive expertise in international political economics, commercial strategy, government relations, brand and public affairs. He is proficient in Chinese and has made more than 100 visits to Asia over the past 20 years.

Mr. Pearcey received a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies (Asian Studies) with distinction (University Prize Winner) at UNSW Sydney. He joined the Australia China Business Council in 2007 and became its Chief Executive Officer two years later.

He is a Scholar of the Order of Australia Association Foundation, a Member of the Group of Eight’s International Strategy Group, and an Executive Committee Member of the Universities Alliance of the Silk Road. He was a Visiting Fellow in Pacific and Asian History at the Australian National University and a Board Member of the Australia India Institute, and was an Exchange Scholar in the School of Social Sciences at Tsinghua University, Beijing.
