Event Details:

"Maritime Silk Road Suite" is a series of academic activities to be held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from March 27 to April 30, 2017, focusing on the linguistic properties of Chinese spoken in the countries and areas along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. "Maritime Silk Road Suite" is jointly organised by the T. T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre, the Institute of Chinese Studies and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, co-organised by the Global China Research Programme, the University Library and The Commercial Press (H.K.) Ltd., and sponsored by the Faculty of Arts, United College, New Asia College, and The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong.

"Maritime Silk Road Suite" includes "Voices of the Maritime Silk Road", two book exhibitions, one international symposium, and one theme-based workshop.

"Voices of the Maritime Silk Road" includes three informal talks to be held in the CUHK University Bookstore Activity Room on March 27, April 3, and 5, respectively, which will be devoted to movies and culture in Southeast Asia, learning Chinese as a second language, and Singapore Chinese culture.

The two book exhibitions on overseas Chinese and Chinese language learning will be organized from March 27 to April 9 in the University Bookstore and from March 27 to April 30 in the University Library.

The International Symposium on Chinese on the Maritime Silk Road will take place on April 7 and 8. There will be more than a hundred presenters to come and share their views on overseas Chinese and various topics in Chinese linguistics. Seven invited speakers from Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam will give a plenary speech in the opening session and in the closing session.

In addition to the plenary speeches and regular sessions, there will be a two-day theme-based workshop on Chinese teaching and learning for non-Chinese speaking students (NCS) in Hong Kong during the Symposium.

All these activities are expected to arouse some interest in Chinese and its variants spoken in the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which may help people have a better understanding of the linguistics research of Chinese from a new perspective.
